HAMBRICK Family History

[As told by Anita Newton, great-granddaughter of Dollie Barnes Hambrick, granddaughter of Donnie Hambrick Gilstrap]

The Hambrick branch of the BHHJ tree also began in Stockbridge, GA with the marriage of William Hambrick to Dollie Barnes. There were ten (10) children born to this union: Otto, Benjamin, William (Bill). Linzer (Bo), Sophronia, Effie, Alberta, St. Clair (Clara), and Donnie, and Belle.

When the family left Georgia, they migrated north first to Detroit, Michigan, then to Twinsburg, Ohio and finally settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Great-grandfather, William Sr., found work in the factories where he labored to support his family. As more members migrated north, they, at times, found refuge, help and support with the Hambrick’s and churches in which to worship. My grandmother, Donnie, was the second oldest child (first girl) born. When her parents died, first her mother, Dollie; then sometime later in 1940, her father, William, she became both mother and father to her siblings, instilling in them values taught to her by both parents and other relatives.
